Wheelbase

The motor unit in a sim racing setup that generates force feedback. The wheel rim attaches to the wheelbase via quick release or fixed connection.

Wheelbase

The wheelbase is the heart of a sim racing setup—it's the motor unit that creates force feedback. When people talk about upgrading their "wheel," they often mean upgrading their wheelbase.

What a Wheelbase Does

The wheelbase:

  1. Receives signals from the game about what forces should be felt
  2. Generates torque using electric motor(s)
  3. Transfers force to the wheel rim (and your hands)
  4. Houses electronics for processing, calibration, and connectivity

Everything you feel through the steering wheel—road texture, tire slip, collision impacts—originates from the wheelbase.

Wheelbase vs Wheel vs Wheel Rim

These terms often get confused:

  • Wheelbase: The motor unit (the "base")
  • Wheel rim: The steering wheel that attaches to the base
  • Wheel: Casual term for either the wheelbase or the complete unit (base + rim)

When shopping, verify whether a listing includes just the wheelbase or a bundle with a wheel rim.

Types of Wheelbases

By drive technology:

  • Gear drive: Entry-level, notchy feel (Logitech G29, Thrustmaster T150)
  • Belt drive: Mid-range, smooth feel (Thrustmaster T300)
  • Direct drive: Premium, instant/detailed feel (Fanatec DD, MOZA, Simagic)

By torque level:

  • Entry: 2-5 Nm
  • Mid-range: 5-10 Nm
  • High-end: 10-25+ Nm

Wheelbase Components

Motor: The core component that generates torque. Direct drive uses large, high-quality servo motors; gear/belt drive use smaller motors with mechanical amplification.

Electronics: Control boards, processors, and firmware that translate game signals into motor commands.

Power supply: External power brick (most consumer bases) or integrated power (some high-end units).

Mounting points: Holes or brackets for attaching to a desk, wheel stand, or rig.

Quick release hub: Where the wheel rim attaches (integrated in most modern bases).

Platform Compatibility

Wheelbases have different platform support:

  • PC-only: MOZA, Simagic, Simucube, Cammus
  • PC + PlayStation: Thrustmaster (PS versions), Fanatec (with PS wheel), Logitech (PS versions)
  • PC + Xbox: Thrustmaster (Xbox versions), Fanatec (with Xbox wheel), Logitech (Xbox versions)
  • PC + Both consoles: Some specific Fanatec and Logitech models

Check compatibility before buying—PC-only bases cannot work on consoles.

Mounting Requirements

Wheelbase torque determines mounting needs:

  • Under 5 Nm: Desk clamp included/viable
  • 5-10 Nm: Wheel stand recommended
  • 10+ Nm: Dedicated rig strongly recommended
  • 15+ Nm: Proper 8020 rig or cockpit required

A powerful wheelbase on a weak mount wastes money—the flex undermines the feedback quality.
